Hello Sparkle Writers, welcome to our second #WriterSpotlight edition for the year. We have the beautiful Sinmisola with us today. She is a writer and a speaker and we are sure there’s so much you can learn from her.

Enjoy her interview with us.

Hello Sinmisola. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, my name is Sinmisola Nojimu-Yusuf. I am a 21 year old knowledge junkie who’s constantly learning and developing through books, speech and random life occurrences. I’m a strong believer in social and human capital development and I contribute my quota to this via writing at www.sinmisolany.com and volunteering with various Non-Profit organizations.

How did you discover that you loved writing and wanted to do it professionally?

Writing has always been my medium of self-expression and therapy for as long as I remember. I decided to go ‘professional’ after seeing the effects of my writing on my readers and the great feedback I got on my articles.

What do you love most about writing?

I love the fact that I can be myself through my words. With writing I can express any emotion and even trigger certain emotions in readers. That for me is amazing!

Why did you decide to start your blog?

I needed a haven where I could document my thoughts and share them with the world. It had to be safe, timeless and easily accessible. A blog ticked all those boxes for me.

One challenge bloggers face is being able to write and post consistently. Do you face this challenge and how have you been able to overcome it?

Yes I do! Funny enough I’m facing that challenge right now. I remind myself of why it must be done and push myself to write and share regardless of how I feel about the article/post.

You blog for Thresh Woman and have spoken at several events; how were you able to position yourself to get such opportunities?

Personal branding; I’m very intentional about my brand both online and in reality. I make sure I put my best foot forward always and I try to reflect that via my social media posts, carriage and persona.

Some writers are introverts and prefer to let their writing do the talking but you are also a public speaker. How were you able to groom this skill?

I was in public speaking class for 3 out of the 4 years I spent in the university and I also never pass up an opportunity to hone my speaking skills. Whether it’s making a comment in a meeting or having a one-on-one conversation with a stranger, I always give it my best.

What’s the biggest lesson blogging has taught you?

The internet is a GLOBAL space that must be treasured. Getting views on my blog from far away in Saudi Arabia, Poland and close by in Kenya makes me treasure just how big the world is and how accessible the internet makes it.

You are a personal development junkie. What’s the most recent skill or lesson you have learnt?

My excel skills need a boost! I went for an interview recently where my interviewer told me up front that my excel skill was crap. Now, personally I thought it was decent. I mean for a fresh graduate, particularly one whose discipline wasn’t analytical and has had little or no need to use the platform for serious purposes, I thought it was competitive enough. Well, now I understand that to attain the level of speedy success I’m going for, my skills must be competitive on a global scale! Not just in my local environment. I have now signed up for a short online course on excel.

What was the one thing you wish you knew about writing when you just started?

Preparing your blog post pipeline before sending out that first post is VERY important.

Do you have issues with writer’s block? If yes how do you deal with it especially when you have deadlines?

Yes I do! When it comes, I scout for inspiration by reading articles and stories of successful people until I’m ‘gingered’ to do what needs to be done. When I eventually churn out the article/post, I do a victory dance and reward myself with something.

What is your ultimate dream as a writer?

To be the author of a bestseller book

Besides writing, what are your other hobbies and interests

Reading, communicating and surfing the internet, I really love the internet.

If you could advise a newbie in writing, what would you say?

Read more than you write!!!
