Hello Sparkle Writers! We don’t know about you but we absolutely love the new generation of writers we are seeing.; writers who are sure of what they have and what their writing can do. Today’s #WriterSpotlight guest is a writer and filmmaker with a difference. Enjoy our interview with her.

Hello Tomi, how are you doing?

I am doing very well, thank you.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Tomi Adesina and I am a screenwriter, fiction series blogger and a filmmaker.

A screen writer, film maker and fiction series writer, that’s interesting. What does it take for a person to do these three things?

The first thing needed to do anything is a desire and will. To be these things (screenwriter, filmmaker and fiction series writer), I think you need the heart for this art. It’s a creative process so it’s a necessity that whoever is interested in being a writer can tell a story, can write a story and see the story.

Writing is one thing but film making is something entirely different. Why did you decide to go into this?

I was looking to diversify. Take on a new challenge. Explore. And that was why I decided to go into filmmaking. Plus, working as a screenwriter made me interested in the process of making a film. It was more like an interest born out of necessity. I felt the need to tell my stories from my own eye and that was what led me into filmmaking.

At what point did you know you wanted to do writing and filmmaking professionally?

I always wanted to do writing professionally but I didn’t have the means to publish and so I went into blogging in 2012. It was an experience that give birth to screenwriting for me and from there filmmaking. The minute I got into filmmaking in 2015, it was professional for me, even though I might am still learning and unlearning things but I went in with an intent – I wanted people to watch my films.

What do you love most about making movies?

Story telling. As a writer and young filmmaker, I have had to write, produce and direct my own stories. So the process of creating a story and a character is the most fascinating for me. It’s not even on set when we are shooting. It is from the process of imagining my character and what he is going to do and how he is going to do it, that’s what I enjoy the most as far as movie making is concerned.

Your movie ‘The Other Me’ was selected for the Real Time Film Festival. Congratulations! Can you tell us what the film is about and why you wrote it?

Thank you! The Other Me is story of a young man with Autism who wants to take the love of his life on a date and considering the sensitivity of his condition, it didn’t go quite as planned, but the flip is at the end. We got to understand that it was all in his head. This is why I wrote it. People with special needs have a lot of mind moments because there is a lot going on in there that not everyone can relate or empathize with, so, telling the story of someone with autism is in my own way lending my voice to a cause that I think people should open their mind to and pay more attention to.

In three words what keeps you going?

God. Family. Tomorrow.

We know you have learnt so many lessons from your writing journey. Can you share the most profound lesson with us?

The most important thing I have learnt as a writer is to keep going. Nobody said the journey would be easy but God gives us all grace to face whatever comes our way and you can’t face whatever comes your way if you are not forging ahead. I believe in breaking new grounds and knocking off targets, so I don’t like to stop. I just keep pressing on.

Have you ever doubted your abilities as a writer?

I have however had moments I wanted to give up, and yes, I had for a while but I am thankful for family and friends who kept me going.

Some people write for fame others for fortune, why does Tomi Adesina write?

I write to live. I write because it is the only thing I know how to do. I write because the only person I can relate to is Tomi Adesina the writer, now, if these things (fame and fortune) comes along, I’ll be thankful because I know it’s a good thing that people recognize what you do.

If you could meet one writer what will you tell him/ her?

Francine Rivers (Writer). Her Book, Redeeming Love changed my life.

What legacy will you like to leave behind?

I just want to write and if in the process my writing blesses people, bringing hope, and whatever satisfaction they can derive from it. I am happy.
