#GrammarSeries – Some more mistakes you are probably making

Last week we started a series on a common grammar mistake you are probably making. If you missed that post you should read it here.

Today we are discussing other ways you can correct the bad trend of wordiness. Are you ready to learn?

  1. Delete unnecessary to + infinitive phrases.

Incorrect Version (IV): The duty of a doctor is to treat his patients.

Corrected Version (CV): A doctor treats his patients.

2. Replace wordy introductory phrases with succinct expressions.

Due to the fact that = because

In accordance with your request = as you requested

At this point in time = now

3. Delete words that say the obvious.

4. Avoid using ‘‘it is,’’ ‘‘there is,’’ or ‘‘there are.’’

IV: It is important that we agree.

CV: We must agree.

5. Avoid repetition.

IV: I will appreciate it if you will bring to the attention of your clients…

CV: Please inform your clients of….
