#ChroniclesOfAWriter – This is why you are not getting freelance writing offers

Adedoyin Jaiyesimi

We launched The Sparkle Writer’s Network two weeks ago and we’ve been able to successfully link registered writers with freelance writing opportunities.

One thing I realised during the process is that a lot of writers have a poor personal brand. They do not know how to ‘sell’ themselves and their skills. One of the writers got a job simple because he showed enthusiasm while another lost a great offer because she came across as being demure. She is an amazing writer but she failed to show the client her ‘amazingness’ during their brief meeting.

So today, I’m going to share why your personal brand as a writer matters.

It’s not enough to say that you a great writer. No matter how skilled you are, if you do not package yourself properly and reflect the right image you will lose opportunities.

Your personal brand as a writer starts with everything that can be discovered about you through a Google search. Before anyone gives you a freelance or content writing job, they need to know who they are handing their project to.

And how does a potential client get to know you? It is through the internet. They will search for you. They will go through your social media handles and any platforms where your work has been featured.

Have you taken the time to look at what your personal brand online reflects. You cannot call yourself a writer and you write your Facebook or Twitter posts using shorthand. You know, writing ‘am’ instead of ‘I am’ or using ‘d’ when you want to write ‘the’.

That can affect a potential client’s perception of you.

When a client researches you online, that client also needs to see a track record. They need proof that you actually know what you are doing. So what are your social media posts about? Are they intentional or you just post as the wind moves you? If you are passionate about writing, it should be obvious through your social media profiles.

There are other things to be aware of in building your personal brand as a writer that I will not be able to share now. On Saturday 24th September, I will be teaching 15 writers how to build their personal brand and attract their desired clients. I will also be teaching them how to take advantage of the opportunities that are opening up for writers.
